If you're not sure how to use basic HTML or Dreamwidth-specific tags, please refer to the guide below.
Almost all HTML tags need to be closed. Always remember to follow your open tag with the appropriate /tag to close it!
<b>to make text bold</b> -- displays like this
<i>to make text italicised</i> -- displays like this
<u>to make text underlined</u> -- displays like this
<strike>to use strikethrough</strike> --displays like this
<font size="+1">to change font size relatively</font> -- displays like this
<font size="1">to set font size specifically</font> -- displays like this
Change the numbers to the size of font you desire!
<br> -- is a new line break (does not need a closing tag)
<p> -- is a new paragraph break (does not need a closing tag)
Most casual HTML entries such as the Dreamwidth entry page will register carriage returns and paragraph breaks without them needing to be hard coded.
<img src="LINK TO WHERE THE IMAGE IS HOSTED"> -- embeds an image into your post (does not need a closing tag)
Hotlinking is rude - always upload images to your own webspace before linking them!
(Dreamwidth has some image hosting capabilities if you don't have anywhere to host images.)
<a href="WEBSITE ADDRESS">text for your hyperlink</a> -- eg. this is a link to Rules Mod Post!
This is a list of all HTML tags that can be used on Dreamwidth.
Dreamwidth has a few specific tags that you can use in your entries.
The most important one is how to do a cut as we please ask you to keep your content behind a cut tag!
<cut text="what you want your cut tag to say">
TEXT BEHIND A CUT HERE
</cut>
You can see examples of cut tags in action in the Rules Mod Post.
Dreamwidth also allows users to link to other users and communities - even if they're not on Dreamwidth.
Examples:
<user name=THEIRNAME> -- eg.
velithya
<user name=COMMUNITYNAME> -- eg.
mdzsfanworks
<user name=THEIRNAME site="archiveofourown.org"> -- eg.
velithya
Dreamwidth has a list of 3rd party sites that can be linked to in their FAQ here.
Finally, if you're new to Dreamwidth or maybe haven't spent much time here, the Dreamwidth FAQ is actually pretty comprehensive and should hopefully be able to answer any other questions you have!
Finally, I recommend using the "PREVIEW" button before you post - you can check to see that all your tags have closed properly and your entry is displaying how you want it.
Happy posting!
